Two tales of insurance you must have

If you don’t have UV filters on all your lenses, stop reading this and get them.

I was at the Tom Chapin show and *gasp* dropped my camera right on my 70-300 big bucks lens.  Yup, a face dive onto cement floor.  SMACK!

I felt my stomach drop as I picked up the camera and saw broken glass on the floor.  Onlookers gasped and patted my back.  I didn’t panic.  I just quietly removed myself from the crowd and began to investigate.

It was only the filter that shattered.  WHEW!!!! I went to my local camera store and the owner said…”Your filter did exactly what it was supposed to do.”

PROTECT YOUR LENSES!!! BUY UV LENS FLITERS

Second issue…

If you have not backed up in awhile OR as in my case you think you are, but in realality it is a flimy process at best…STOP READING AND GO BACK UP (Or learn how to and do it)!

My laptop harddrive died on Saturday.

Yes, for you Sex And The City fans…I “sad mac’d”.  I tried to start-up my laptop Saturday Morning and it screamed like Donald Sutherland in Invasion of The Body Snatchers.

Then this ugly little file folder symbol with a “?” on it kept flashing at me.  This is my 6th Apple computer and this is the first time this has happened.  The Short Hills’ Apple Store Genius Bar was awesome and got me back up and running by end of Saturday.  We had a long discussion about “backing up” and it turns out, I thought I was backing up, but I was not.  I was sving some files but not backing the system up.

YIKES!

The trade off…I have to reload all my software packages  and retrace all of my paths again becuase I *and I am really really stupid* did not use Time Machine.  I will from now on.

So hang in there…if you have images you would like posted for discussion as guest shutters email me.  I am rebuilding as fast as I can.

  1. OH, NO! Must have been something in the air on Saturday because my hard drive crapped out on Saturday too, and I hadn’t backed up in AWHILE. My computer wouldn’t even turn on. Never a good sign. Lucky for me, I live with my very own computer guru, so I was up and running again by Saturday night too. I can sympathize. Good luck with regathering your info.

  2. Oh man – rough week, shrewbie! I hope this week is a much better one for you!

  3. It’s like your laptop broke up with you on a post-it.

My DH backs up all of our stuff twice a week. Seriously, TWICE!

  4. Glad everything turned out alright. Since I’m on a mac, I’m curious what you were doing wrong on your backups? I transfer all my files from my mac to two external hard drives once a month. However I don’t use Time Machine, I just recopy everything… is that bad?

I also don’t backup the system files or software… just the photos, music and documents.

  5. hey shrewbie – i sent you a guest shutter candidate. Check your spam folder – your email server tends to toss me in there sometimes!
    🙂
